Wreath of Respect will be joining this amazing event 2022.

Story

The 40th anniversary of the Falklands war is in 2022.  Our ride is to promote:  Remembrance, Respect, Awareness and Support.

Following our three successful rides in 2019, 2020 and 2021, from Monday 02 May to Sunday 15 May 2022 a team of four veterans - Paul Moore, Charlie McColgan, (both Falklands veterans) Phill Damant and Tony McKie will be riding around the UK by motorbike visiting the gravesites and memorials of men of who lost their lives in the Falklands war in 1982.   A total of 2600 miles in 14 days, visiting over 80 graves and memorials of the Falklands war.

We are doing this ride to demonstrate that these men are not forgotten, to pay our respects to each one and their families, and to raise funds for the South Atlantic Medal Association who continue to support veterans of the Falklands war and most importantly, the families who have lost loved ones.

We will cover the whole of the UK including Lanchester,  Gosforth, Whitley Bay, Dundee, Macduff, Arbroath, Oban, Spean Bridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hamilton, Irvine, Lisburn, Wrexham, Liverpool, Rhyl, Wrexham, Bolton, Stockport, Sheffield, Derby, Lowestoft, Braintree, Northampton,  Cinderford, Ross on Wye, Hereford, Pontypool,  Gillingham, Worthing, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Tidworth, Brookwood, Frimley and Aldershot.  In North Yorkshire, on Day 15 our final act of remembrance will be at Hutton Rudby in North Yorkshire where we will pay our respects to Sir Rex Hunt, the former Governor of the Falkland Islands in 1982,  before ending the ride at The Last Post Memorial bar in Thornaby.

During the ride, any of our supporters, families and friends are welcome to join us.  We will try to stick to the published programme as much as possible to make it easy for you to do so, and will always try to be early if we can.  We also expect to be joined at various times by riders from Airborne Forces Riders, RBL Riders, The Widows Sons, (Masonic Riders), The Royal Marine Riders, Invictus MC, Patriots MC, Norfolk HOG and others.

Joining Riders are most welcome but you must understand that we are following a programme and timings are very tight.  We will not wait for you if you arrive late or miss an RV.  Note also that we may have to change the plan at short notice for a variety of reasons so keep an eye on the Facebook page for updates.  You also must make all of your own admin arrangements.  Keep updated on our Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/Falklands-War-SAMA-Ride-of-Respect-2022

The programme is out on our Facebook page and we would love families and friends of the fallen to join us in our act of remembrance and respect at the grave or memorial.  We are limited to about half an hour at each location due to the distances we have to cover each day so we will keep our short service very simple and respectful.  As we did not know all of the fallen personally it is always emotional and inspirational to talk with their families and friends who attend, and find out a little about the person that they lost. It would be an honour to meet you.

The South Atlantic Medal Association intend to maintain and promote a sense of pride and comradeship among all veterans of the South Atlantic campaign, in a manner which respects both individual privacy and personal requirements. We also wish to establish and maintain contact with other organisations involved in the welfare of of the Armed Forces and ensure that due consideration is given to the interests of South Atlantic veterans. SAMA (82) will also investigate for consideration, by an appropriate organisation, any case of hardship or distress amongst South Atlantic veterans

RIDERS COSTS - a request.

This ride is entirely self-funded by the riders themselves and from previous experience we know that it costs around £1300 each just to complete the ride.  We are very grateful for any assistance, and if you would like to help with our direct costs separate to your charitable donation, either as an individual or a corporate donation to our ride expenses, these can be made by PayPal at: paul508@mac.com. The wreath of respect is important to me in both a respective and personal way, it is respective due to always being a constant reminder to all those that have been lost due to past wars, it is also a reminder that those who were lost will never be forgotten. It is important to me on a personal level because it was an event that changed my life and in that time I made many new friends which I am still in contact with to this day and opened many doors for me to show my talent The wreath of respect ride will always be a memory I cherish for many years to come

Delighted to be invited to 396 (Paisley) Squadron Air Training Corps with the Wreath of Respect.
Thank you Iain Shoveller for affording us the time to tell everyone about the Wreath of Respect and for your help with the proposed visit to the Scottish War Blinded Centre Paisley.

The Wreath of Respect was very well received at the Scottish War Blinded Centre in Paisley today. It was a pleasure to be able to speak with Veterans who use the centre about the Wreath, its' history and its travels. Some of the Veterans recounted tales of members of their own families who served and about VC Recipients commemorated locally and in areas where they lived across the West of Scotland.
After lunch the CO of 396 (Paisley) Squadron ATC, Iain Shoverell, Staff and Cadets joined us for a very moving Service of Remembrance conducted by the Sqdn Padre. The Banner Party included a Scottish War Blinded Veteran ,who carried the Charity's Standard. For some of the Cadets this was their first Banner Parade performed in public and all carried out their roles with pride and impeccably. After the Service we were treated to refreshments and a visit round the centre to see some of the activities the Members participate in which include Archery, Bowls, Woodwork, Painting, IT Skills, Cookery and much more. Thank you to everyone at the Scottish War Blinded Centre, Hawkhead, Paisley for the warm welcome and hospitality. Thanks also to all at 396 (Paisley) ATC for your support.

The Wreath of Respect is visiting appropriate locations in Scotland. We were honored to be given a private visit to the Shrine & Scottish National War Memorial where the Wreath was placed with a Poppy Wreath by Veterans from different groups to show respect for all who served and made to ultimate sacrifice. Royal Star & Garter Visit

Some of the Wreath of Respect Riders visited the Royal Star & Garter Home in Solihull yesterday after our rehearsal for the Birmingham International Tattoo. We were warmly welcomed and despite the heat a few of the residents waited outside for our arrival and then came to inspect the bikes. We are the first Performers from the Birmingham International Tattoo to have visited the home which is celebrating it's 10th Birthday this year.

After a brief talk about the Wreath of Respect with pictures each of the residents had the opportunity to hold and have their picture taken with the Wreath, and the Riders had the opportunity to chat with them, hear their stories and look around the home. Pictures will follow.

I'm sure this won't be our last visit and we're looking forward to a long and happy association with them and TroopAid as both these organisations are beneficiaries of the Birmingham International Tattoo.

Thank you to Charley Wilson Staff and Residents of the Royal Star and Garter Homes for your hospitality and scrumptious afternoon tea. Thanks also to all the Wreath of Respect Riders who joined us on the visit after a long hard rehearsal in sweltering heat (I know mamy more would have liked to join us but were unable to - there'll be other visits).
